Israel Is Spiritual
The true Israel is defined by faith, not by flesh: believers, Jew and Gentile, are Abraham's seed and the Israel of God.
Three other clusters build on this: The Shadow Whose Body Is Christ, The Root Is Love and Out of the Miry Clay.
Scripture shows this in eight steps:
Who is Israel? Many say it is a nation by blood, with its own plan and its own future, apart from faith in Christ. Others go the other way and say every “Israel” in the Bible just means “the church.” This chain walks through what Scripture itself says. The answer is plain: God’s Israel is made by faith, not by flesh.
Romans 9:6-8
“For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.”
Romans 9:6-8
Paul draws the line himself, and he draws it inside the nation. Being born from Abraham does not make someone true Israel. “The children of the promise are counted for the seed.” There is a true Israel and an Israel only by flesh, and God tells them apart by promise and faith, not blood.
Romans 2:28-29
“For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly… But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
Romans 2:28-29
A real Jew is one inwardly. Real circumcision is of the heart. Paul is not making this up. Moses said it first: “Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart” (Deuteronomy 10:16). And “the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart” (Deuteronomy 30:6). God Himself does it.
Even the name says it. Judah means “praise” (Genesis 29:35). And Paul says the true Jew is the one “whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
Abraham believed God and was counted righteous (Genesis 15:6) before he was circumcised. The sign came after. Ishmael was circumcised too, and Paul still calls him “born after the flesh” (Galatians 4:23). The sign never made the difference.
Galatians 3:7, 16, 29
“Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.”
Galatians 3:7
“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.”
Galatians 3:16
“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Galatians 3:29
The promise was made to one seed, and that seed is Christ. So the way into Abraham’s family is into Christ. If I belong to Christ, I am Abraham’s seed. Faith makes me a child of Abraham, whoever my parents were.
Galatians 4:22-31
“For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise… Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise… So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.”
Galatians 4:22-31
Some build everything on Isaac and Ishmael: Isaac the Hebrew, Ishmael not. But Paul says the line between them was never blood. It was flesh against promise. Then he turns it around: “we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.” Believers stand where Isaac stood. And whoever trusts in his flesh, his family line, his circumcision, stands where Ishmael stood, however pure his blood.
I know the pull of the flesh. I want something of my own to stand on. Paul takes it away.
Exodus 4:22 and Matthew 2:15
“And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn.”
Exodus 4:22
“And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.”
Matthew 2:15
God called the nation Israel His son, His firstborn. Hosea said, “Out of Egypt have I called my son,” about the nation. Matthew takes those words and says them about Jesus. Christ is the true Israel, the Son who was faithful where the nation failed. Those in Him are sons in the Son. This does not mean the word “Israel” always means Jesus. It means Christ is what Israel was meant to be.
Romans 11:17-24
“And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree… boast not against the branches… thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.”
Romans 11:17-18
There is one olive tree. Unbelieving natural branches are broken off. Believing Gentiles are grafted in among the rest, into the same root. So there are not two peoples. And the church is not a new tree planted where Israel used to be. It is grafted into Israel’s own tree. Grafting in is not replacing.
The branches that were broken off were still Israelites by birth. Nothing about their family changed. Yet they were outside. “Because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith” (Romans 11:20). The tree I came from does not decide the tree I am on.
And the root is Christ: “There shall be a root of Jesse… in him shall the Gentiles trust” (Romans 15:12). The Father is the one who tends the tree (John 15:1). I am not qualified for something. I am joined to Someone.
Ephesians 2:14-19
“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us… for to make in himself of twain one new man… Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”
Ephesians 2:14-19
Before, Gentiles were “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise” (Ephesians 2:12). “But now,” Paul says, they are brought near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13). The wall is down. Two are made one new man, one household. “For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father” (Ephesians 2:18). One door, not two. To build two peoples with two futures is to put back the wall the cross tore down.
Galatians 6:16 and 1 Peter 2:9
“And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.”
Galatians 6:16
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.”
1 Peter 2:9
Scripture gives believers the very names Israel once wore: “the Israel of God,” “an holy nation,” “a royal priesthood.”
What this means
The true Israel is defined by faith, not by flesh. Believers, Jew and Gentile, one body, are Abraham’s seed and the Israel of God. One people, one tree, one household, and its root is Christ.
This does not erase the facts of family. Paul still calls the Israelites “my kinsmen according to the flesh” (Romans 9:3). Descent is real. It just never makes anyone God’s people. And not every prophecy about Israel is settled by this chain. Each one is read where it stands.
As for me, I have no bloodline to boast in. I was a wild branch. I was grafted in “contrary to nature” (Romans 11:24), by faith alone, and I stand by faith.
