Proof Cluster 13

The Head Is the Saviour of the Body

Christ is the Head and the Saviour of the body, so a church that says there is no salvation outside it has made itself the head.

Three other clusters build on this: The One God Is the Father, The Two Gardens and A Witness of His Resurrection.

Scripture shows this in five steps:

  1. Ephesians 5:23
  2. Colossians 1:18
  3. Colossians 2:19
  4. 1 Timothy 2:5
  5. Acts 4:12 and John 14:6

It all comes together in Revelation 18:7.

Rome teaches: “No salvation outside the Church.” It sounds humble, as if it only says where to find safety. But Scripture joins two things together that cannot be pulled apart: the one who saves the body is the head of the body. Whoever claims to save has claimed to be the head.

Ephesians 5:23

“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

Ephesians 5:23

This is the key. In one sentence Paul gives Christ three roles. He is the Head of the church. He is the Husband, for the whole passage is about marriage, “a great mystery… concerning Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:32). And He is the Saviour of the body.

Head and Saviour are the same Person. Whoever saves the body is its head. Whoever claims to save the body has claimed to be its head.

Colossians 1:18

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

Colossians 1:18

The body has one Head, and it is Christ. He has it so that He has first place in all things. There is no second head, no one standing in for Him. A second head does not add to His place. It takes it away.

Colossians 2:19

“And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.”

Colossians 2:19

Just before this, Paul warns against a religion of false humility and the worship of angels, with go-betweens set up between the believer and Christ. What is wrong with it? It is “not holding the Head.” The body lives from its Head. Cut off from Him, it cannot grow with God’s growth, however grand it looks.

Anyone who puts another head, husband or saviour between the body and Christ is not holding the Head.

1 Timothy 2:5

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 2:5

Between God and men there is one go-between. Not a church, not a queen of heaven, not a priesthood, not saints with merits to hand out. One, and He is the man Christ Jesus. The one Head is also the one mediator.

So every extra mediator is an attempt to add a head to the body: Mary as a helper in saving, the saints as those who pray for us before God, the priest through whom grace is handed out, the Church without which no one is saved. This verse forbids them all.

Acts 4:12 and John 14:6

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 14:6

Where is salvation? In His name, not in an institution. In the Son, who is the way to the Father, not in a body that makes itself the way to the Son. The Church is not Christ. She is His body and His bride. A bride who says “there is no salvation except in me” has mistaken herself for her Husband.

Revelation 18:7

“How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.”

Revelation 18:7

Here the chain closes. A widow once had a husband. The harlot says she is no widow. She never needed a husband. She is her own.

Put “no salvation outside the Church” through the chain. The Head is the Saviour of the body. A body that says “no salvation outside me” calls itself the saviour of the body. So it has made itself the head. That is exactly “not holding the Head.” This is not the humble edge of the ark. It is Babylon speaking from her throne: the bride who made herself a queen.

What this means

There is one Head, and He is the Saviour. The bride receives salvation from her Husband. She does not hand it out as a queen.

The same thing happens on a smaller scale. It happened first in Eden, when Adam, made to lead, followed Eve instead. And it happens in me, whenever I make my own obedience the proof that I am saved. Then I take the place that belongs to the Head, and I count my obedience where only His obedience counts (Romans 5:19). Whoever claims the Head’s place, a church, a teacher, or a man measuring himself, must first take that place away from Christ.

I know that move. It is mine. The answer is to hold the Head.
