The Chains of Darkness
The fallen angels are bound by being shut out from God's light, so they are real, bound and active at once, under a sentence that will be carried out.
Scripture shows this in five steps:
It all comes together in Revelation 20:1-3, 10.
Scripture says the angels who sinned are held in “chains of darkness.” Many picture a prison cell. Then they are stuck: either the fallen angels are locked away and can do nothing, or, since evil spirits are plainly at work in the Gospels, they are not real at all. Both answers are wrong. These passages show what the chains really are.
2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6
“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;”
2 Peter 2:4
“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.”
Jude 6
Real angels sinned. They left the place God gave them. Now they are held for judgment.
The word Peter uses for “cast them down to hell” is Tartarus. To the Greeks, Tartarus was where rebel heavenly powers were put away. Peter uses it of no one else in Scripture. It speaks of real rebel spirits, not of the sin in my own flesh, and not of dead people. And Peter uses it as something God did to them. It names a sentence, not an address.
Peter and Jude use different words for the chains. But both use the same word for the darkness. The darkness is the key.
1 John 1:5
“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
1 John 1:5
If God is light, then to be cast away from God is to be cast into darkness. That is the chain. Not iron and a cell, but being shut out from the light. They left their place with God, and they cannot go back. That loss is what holds them.
Scripture often speaks this way. The king of Babylon is “fallen from heaven” (Isaiah 14:12), and it means he lost his throne, not that he moved house. A fall in Scripture is often about standing, not about place.
Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Ephesians 6:12
The fallen are still at work. They are “rulers of the darkness.” A prison cell cannot explain that. But it fits the chain exactly. They act in the darkness, and the darkness is the very thing that binds them. Bound and active are both true.
Matthew 8:29 and Luke 8:31
“Art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”
Matthew 8:29
“And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.”
Luke 8:31
The evil spirits say it themselves. They know their judgment is fixed, and they know it has not come yet: “before the time.” They beg not to be sent into the deep, so they are not there yet. There is one fallen host, shut out from the light, moving in the world’s night, waiting for its end. And even now they can only act as far as God allows (Job 1 and 2). They are real, but they are never God’s equal.
Matthew 22:30
“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”
Matthew 22:30
Active does not mean able to do anything. Evil spirits can tempt, trouble and deceive, as far as God allows. But angels do not marry. So they cannot father children with women. Both are true: they interfere, and they cannot breed.
Revelation 20:1-3, 10
“And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit… And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.”
Revelation 20:2-3, 10
“Reserved unto judgment” has an end. When God wills it, Satan is bound in the bottomless pit. At last the devil is cast into the lake of fire. That is the second death. It is not the same as the grave where dead people lie. The sentence the fallen carry in the darkness is finally carried out.
What this means
The chains of darkness are not a cell. They are what it means to be cast away from God, who is light. So the fallen angels are real, bound and active all at once. They rule in the darkness of this world. They know their sentence. They wait for the lake of fire. And they cannot do what God does not allow.
The enemy is real. But he is already sentenced, and the One who is light has the last word.
