Brought Forth
God, who never changes, did not become a man; He brought forth a man, Jesus Christ, to fulfil His eternal purpose.
Four other clusters build on this: The Two Gardens, The Everlasting Dominion, The Breath Is Not the Spirit and The Light of the First Day.
Scripture shows this in five steps:
- Malachi 3:6, backed by James 1:17
- 1 Peter 1:20
- Galatians 4:4
- Acts 13:33, backed by Psalm 2:7
- Ephesians 3:11
It all comes together in Hebrews 13:20.
Many of us learned to say: “God became a man.” It sounds like the heart of the Christmas story. But Scripture never says it. It says something else, step by step: God planned, God sent, God made, God raised. God did not turn into a man. He brought forth a man.
Nothing here needs special light to see. It is laid out verse by verse, so that anyone can check it, the way the Bereans “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).
Malachi 3:6
“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
Malachi 3:6
This is the floor. God does not change. James says the same: “the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).
To become something you were not before is to change, and to change in the deepest way. If God became a man, then the God who does not change began in a womb, grew “in wisdom and stature” (Luke 2:52), thirsted, and died. That cannot be. So “became” is ruled out from the start. What is left is “brought forth.”
1 Peter 1:20
“Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”
1 Peter 1:20
Here are Scripture’s own two steps. First, foreordained: planned and known by God before the world. Then, manifest: brought out into the open, in time.
Being planned before the world is not the same as living before the world. Scripture says the same about others. Believers were “chosen in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). No one thinks we lived back then. The kingdom was “prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). No one thinks it was already standing.
And Peter says it about the cross itself. Jesus was “delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). The cross happened once, under Pilate, on one day. It was planned before, but it happened in time. In the verse just before, Peter calls Him “Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you” (Acts 2:22). If being planned beforehand does not put the cross before the world, it does not put Christ there either.
Galatians 4:4
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.”
Galatians 4:4
Now we see where He was made manifest. “Made of a woman.” Not “appeared as a man.” Not “came down with flesh from heaven.” Made of a woman, under the law, at a point in history. Like every child of Adam, He had a beginning, born of a mother. And yet He was like no other, because the Spirit of God came upon Mary: “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).
He is the only child whose father is God directly, born of a woman. His flesh came from Mary. What came directly from God was the begetting.
Acts 13:33
“God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.”
Acts 13:33
Many teach that the Son was begotten before the world, in eternity. But the psalm says “this day.” A day is in time.
Scripture shows two such days, first the natural and then the spiritual. The first is His birth. He was the “only begotten Son” (John 3:16), and God “gave” Him. You cannot give a son who does not yet exist. So He was already the Son when He was handed over to the cross. That began at the cradle.
The second day is the resurrection. That is the day Paul means here. Christ was raised in a glorious body, “the firstborn from the dead” (Colossians 1:18), “declared to be the Son of God with power” (Romans 1:4). He was the first of a new creation, with many to follow after Him.
Born of a woman, then raised from the dead. Both days are in time. Neither is before the world.
Ephesians 3:11
“According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Ephesians 3:11
Then what was there before the world? Some teach that the Father and the Son made a covenant with each other back then, like two partners signing a deal. But Paul does not say a covenant between persons. He says a purpose. A covenant needs two sides. A purpose needs only one mind. One God had one eternal purpose, and He purposed it in Christ.
Paul was the apostle to whom God showed deep things. If there had been a covenant between divine persons before time, he would have been the man to say so. He never does. Every time, he speaks of what the one God planned, promised and foreknew.
Hebrews 13:20
“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.”
Hebrews 13:20
This seals the chain. The everlasting covenant is real. But it was not sealed in a meeting before time. It was sealed in blood: the blood of the man God brought forth, made of a woman, raised from the dead. The covenant is everlasting because God’s purpose is eternal.
What this means
God did not become a man. God brought forth a man. Planned before the world. Made of a woman when the time had come. Raised from the dead on the day God said “this day have I begotten thee.” And His blood seals the everlasting covenant.
This means the God I trust does not change. What He planned, He did. And the one He sent to save me is a real man, born as I was born, who died and was raised. Everything about Him was brought forth by God, for me.
