Proof Cluster 25

The Reward Is Not the Gift

Eternal life is a gift that cannot be lost, and the reward for a believer's works is a separate thing that can be won or lost at the judgment seat of Christ.

Four other clusters build on this: Born of Incorruptible Seed, Hidden and Revealed: The Descending City, Every Mouth Stopped and The Root Is Love.

Scripture shows this in four steps:

  1. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15
  2. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
  3. 2 Corinthians 5:10
  4. Romans 14:10-12

Underneath it all lies Romans 4:4.

Paul says he keeps his body under control, “lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” If Paul could be thrown away, many ask, how can I be sure of heaven? But the Bible keeps two things apart. One is the gift: eternal life, given freely and kept forever. The other is the reward: what my works earn, and that can be won or lost. These verses are all about the second.

1 Corinthians 3:11-15

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

1 Corinthians 3:11-15

Here are both things in one place. The foundation is Christ, laid once and never tested. What I build on it is my work, and the fire tests that.

If my work burns, I “suffer loss.” But what do I lose? Not myself. The same verse says, “he himself shall be saved.” I lose the reward. The work can burn while the worker is saved. He comes out of the fire with empty hands, but he is safe, and he is God’s.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Look at the words around “castaway”: a race, a prize, a crown. The word Paul uses means a runner who did not pass the test and is disqualified. He loses the prize, not his place in the family. A few verses earlier Paul calls what he is working for a “reward” (1 Corinthians 9:17-18). Paul is not afraid of losing his salvation. He is afraid of preaching to others and then losing his own crown. The crown can be lost. The life cannot.

2 Corinthians 5:10

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

2 Corinthians 5:10

Who stands here? “We,” the believers, Paul too. What is looked at? “The things done in his body,” our deeds. The verse does not say we come to find out whether we are saved. It says we come to “receive.” This is where sons are paid for what they did. A father does not check whether a boy is his child at the very moment he hands him his wages.

“Good or bad” is about the deeds, not about where a person goes. Some of my works are gold, and some are wood. The fire sorts them.

Romans 14:10-12

“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.”

Romans 14:10

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

Romans 14:12

Paul tells brothers to stop judging each other, because each will answer for himself before Christ. This is the family giving account, the saved answering for how they lived. It is not the great white throne, where the dead who are not in the book of life are judged (Revelation 20:11-15). That is a different judgment, for different people.

Romans 4:4

“Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.”

Romans 4:4

Paul tells us what a reward is: “of debt,” like wages owed for work. The gift is the opposite. It is “not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:9). So the reward and the gift are two different kinds of things. One I work for. The other I cannot work for.

That is why my reward can be at risk without my salvation being at risk. They were never in the same account. Fire can burn wages. It cannot burn a gift. “The gift of God is eternal life” (Romans 6:23), and “the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” (Romans 11:29). If the gift could be lost by my failing, it was never a gift. It was only wages paid late.

What this means

The reward is not the gift. Every “loss,” every “castaway,” every word about the judgment seat falls on my works. My salvation is the foundation, and the fire never touches it.

This does not make the judgment seat small. To stand before Christ and watch my life’s work turn to ash would be a real and painful loss. Paul feared it, and so should I. But I do not stand there to find out whether I am His child. I am. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

I know my building. Much of it is wood and hay. Some of it I built to be seen. If it burns, I will lose what it might have earned. But I will not lose Him. And for those who are His, the word spoken there is not a sentence but praise: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).
